Right to Information (RTI)

The Right to Information Act, 2005 provides a legal framework that allows citizens to request and receive information from public authorities. Its primary aim is to enhance transparency and accountability in the functioning of government bodies and other institutions covered under the Act. As per Section 2(h), a 'public authority' refers to any body, authority, or institution of self-governance created by the Constitution, established by a law passed by Parliament or a State Legislature, or formed through a notification issued by the relevant government. This also includes organizations that are owned, controlled, or significantly funded by the government. Under Section 2(j), the 'Right to Information' is defined as the entitlement of citizens to access information that is available with, or under the control of, a public authority, in accordance with the provisions of the Act.
